Married Ann Cliff on 4 January 1774 at St Mary’s Church, Handsworth, Staffordshire. Joseph signed his name, Ann made her mark X. Present as witnesses were Richard Bentley and John Homer.
Children - fourteen born between 1774 and 1797 - John born c 1774 baptised 28 August 1774 at St Mary’s Church, Handsworth; Elizabeth born c 1776 baptised 27 December 1776 at St Lawrence Church, Northfield; Nancy (Ann) born c 1779 baptised 6 March 1779 at St Lawrence Church, Northfield; Hannah born c 1781 baptised 29 April 1781; Joseph born c 1783 baptised 30 March 1783; William born 1 January 1785 baptised 21 January 1785; Charles born 11 September 1786 baptised 30 September 1786; Sarah born c 1788 baptised 24 March 1788; Mary born 31 May 1789 baptised 21 June 1789; Henrietta (known as Etty) born 17 June 1790 baptised 9 July 1790; George born 25 July 1791 baptised 21 August 1791; Sarah born 25 July 1791 baptised 21 August 1791; Francis born 4 July 1793 baptised 28 July 1793; Edward born 18 April 1797 baptised 14 May 1797, all at St Nicholas Church, Kings Norton.
Not long after the birth of their first child John, Joseph and Ann left Handsworth and moved to Nobbs Mill, Northfield, Worcestershire. Northfield was a fairly poor parish and farming community with a number of mills on the banks of the river Rea where locally grown corn was ground. By 1781 the family had prospered for them to leave Northield and move to Headley Heath, Kings Norton, Worcestershire a more affluent location.
Kings Norton was a mainly rural farming community. Some time later the family moved to Alcester Lanes End which was a short distance away from Headley Heath, and bordered on the village of Kings Heath. Alcester Lanes End was situated on the main stagecoach route which gave access to the north and the south of the country.
The Crathorne’s became a well-known local family who had connections, both personally and in business, with people in the ever-expanding town of Birmingham, some 3 or 4 miles away.
Many of the struggling local agricultural workers began to turn to various cottage industries to supplement their incomes in preference to seeking employment in Birmingham, and whole families had begun to work together in their homes making iron nails, etc., using iron wire. Joseph had probably set up his wire drawing business at Alcester Lanes End during the canal building period and would have helped to subsidise the families’ income. The location of Alcester Lanes End was ideal for manufacturing. Being situated a short distance from the turnpike road Joseph’s raw materials and finished work could be transported relatively easily in and out of the farm-site and onto the turnpike road.
Each year the Overseers of the Poor assessed the income of the local residents, this was then taxed and the monies raised provided financial assistance to the poor of the parish. For the year of 1787 to 1788 Joseph’s annual income was taxed at 3d in the pound and his contribution to the parish chest for that period would be 5 shillings and two pence halfpenny.
Died 22 May 1822 age 81 and buried at St Nicholas Church, Kings Norton.

Great Great Great Great Great Grandparents

John Crathorne (b170? – d1756) (Arthur Frederick’s Great Great Great Great Grandfather)

Born early 1700's.
Married Sarah ??? during the summer of 1726. Son John baptised 19 May 1726 at St Mary's Church, Handsworth. Wife Sarah buried same day. Son John died six weeks later and buried 8 July 1726.
Married Hannah Nail on 9 April 1727 at St Mary's Church, Handsworth.
Children - Hannah born c1728, died and buried 9 April 1728; Hannah born c1736 baptised 6 September 1736; Sarah born c1738 baptised 24 June 1738, died shortly after; Sarah born c1739 baptised 26 April 1739; Joseph born c1741 baptised 26 September 1741, all at St Mary's Church, Handsworth.
In the March of 1756 John Crathorne applied for financial assistance to help maintain his family after he had become incapacitated and was unable to work. The Overseers of the Poor April accounts record John as receiving a payment of 2s during the March of that year, but John’s condition continued to deteriorate and within a few weeks of his payment he died. The family must have been in dire need because the Overseers agreed that John’s funeral charges of 14s 10d should to be met by the parish.
Buried on 25 March 1756 at St Mary's churchyard.

Hannah Nail (bc1705 – d1772) (Arthur Frederick’s Great Great Great Great Grandmother)

Born about 1705.
Married John Crathorn on 9 April 1727 at St Mary's Church, Handsworth.
Children - Hannah born c1728, died and buried 9 April 1728; Hannah born c1736 baptised 6 September 1736; Sarah born c1738 baptised 24 June 1738, died shortly after; Sarah born c1739 baptised 26 April 1739; Joseph born c1741 baptised 26 September 1741, all at St Mary's Church, Handsworth.
John’s death in 1756 had left behind his wife Hannah, daughters Hannah 20 and Sarah 18 and son Joseph 14 years old. Joseph may have been in employment at the time of his father’s death, as the majority of 14-year-old males at this time would have been employed. Two years after her husband’s death Hannah found it necessary to apply for financial assistance from the parish. The parish accounts of the Overseers of the Poor for April 1758 records ‘Widow Crathorne’ as receiving 4s on Tuesday the 28 March 1758, and then the following week on Tuesday the 4 April she received another 1s. What had befallen “Widow Crathorne”, or how she used her 5s is not documented but this was the last time Hannah would apply for assistance from the Overseers.
Hannah Crathorne had remained in Handsworth and she had survived her husband by nearly sixteen years when she died in May 1772. She was buried on 24 May 1772 in St Mary’s churchyard.
